5.4. Check of functioning and adjustment of the moment of ignition (TCI system)

At adjustment of the moment of ignition you hold hands, the equipment and wires at sufficient distance from a krylchatka of the fan.


In this section the procedure of check and adjustment of the moment of ignition on the engines equipped with TCI is described. On engines the moment of ignition decides on Motronic control system in an electronic control unit and is not subject to adjustment. By means of the following procedure it is possible to check the ignition moment, but no numerical values can be received therefore if reasons about the wrong moment of ignition appear, then address the dealer of BMW.

Some special tools are necessary for this procedure. The engine has to have the normal working temperature and the conditioner of air (if it is established) has to be switched off. Make sure that idling turns correct.

Tools for check and adjustment of the moment of ignition

1 — Vacuum caps - In most cases vacuum hoses have to be disconnected and muffled. For this purpose at desire it is possible to use caps of the different sizes and forms
2 — the Stroboscopic lamp with the induction sensor - Flashes the bright directed ray of light at operation of a spark plug No. 1. Connect wires according to the enclosed instruction
3 — the Key - On some models the bolt of fastening is remote for the ignition distributor usual keys or face heads. It is necessary to apply a similar key


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Cock the parking brake and for prevention of the movement of the car block wheels. Transmission has to be in the neutral family way (manual) or in situation the Parking (automatic).
  2. Tags of the moment of ignition are located on an engine flywheel (they can be seen through an opening of check of the moment of ignition in a coupling case) and/or on a damper of tortional fluctuations on an engine front.
  3. If the vacuum regulator of an advancing of ignition is used, then disconnect from it a vacuum hose.
  4. Connect in compliance with the instruction of manufacturers a tachometer and a stroboscopic lamp (the lamp with the induction sensor is preferable). Usually wires of food of a stroboscopic lamp are connected to plugs of the rechargeable battery, and the wire of the sensor is connected to a high-voltage wire of a spark plug No. 1. Spark plug No. 1 closest to an engine front.

If the stroboscopic lamp with the induction sensor is inaccessible, then for connection of a wire of management of a stroboscopic lamp do not puncture a high-voltage wire of a spark plug. If isolation of a high-voltage wire is damaged, then tension of a secondary chain in a point of damage will become isolated on the case and the engine will glitch.


On some models for check of system of ignition the VMT transmitter is installed. However, for its use it is necessary to connect a special tester of BMW therefore if the special tester is inaccessible, then it is necessary to use a usual stroboscopic lamp to the diagnostic socket. Tags of the moment of ignition can be located on a damper of tortional fluctuations and if they are absent, then there has to be VMT tag. If the stroboscopic lamp has an adjustable delay, then the moment of ignition can be defined by preliminary zeroing of measurement, and then rotation of the adjusting device before combination of tags of VMT then the size of an advancing of the moment of ignition is read out from a stroboscopic lamp. If the standard stroboscopic lamp is used, then according to the required advancing of the moment of ignition apply a tag on a damper of tortional fluctuations and for calculation of distance from VMT tag to a tag of the moment of ignition use a formula:

  1. At the switched-off ignition weaken an ignition distributor bracket nut so that the distributor turned without slipping.
  2. Make sure that wires of a stroboscopic lamp pass far from driving belts and the fan, then start the engine.
  3. Increase engine turns to the required value and then direct the flashing stroboscopic lamp to ignition tags - be very careful with moving parts of the engine.
  4. The tag on a flywheel or a damper of tortional fluctuations has to seem motionless. If it appears the required tag combined with on a case of coupling or a forward cover of the engine, then the ignition moment correct.

  1. If tags are not combined, then adjustment is required. Very slowly rotate the ignition distributor until tags are combined, taking measures not to touch high-voltage wires.
  2. Tighten a nut of a bracket of the distributor and double-check the ignition moment.
  3. Kill the engine and disconnect a stroboscopic lamp and a tachometer. Attach a vacuum hose if is available.
