11.2.5. Replacement of a rack or shock-absorber / twisted spring

Removal

This Section belongs to all assemblies of a rack of a forward suspension bracket, and, to assemblies of a spring and the shock-absorber of a back suspension bracket.

If on racks, shock-absorbers or twisted springs strong indications of wear are noticed (such as liquid leak, loss of shock-absorbing ability, the damaged, stretched or burst twisted springs), check all parameters before any work. Racks or assemblies of the shock-absorber with a spring are available in workshops for exchange that considerably saves work and time. Before dismantling of the car always check the cost and existence in sale of details necessary for you.

Dismantle of a rack of a suspension bracket or assembly of the shock-absorber with a spring is potentially dangerous business, it needs to pay special attention, otherwise it can lead to serious mutilations. Use only the high-quality tool for compression of springs and attentively follow the instructions of the producer attached to the tool. After removal of a twisted spring from assembly of a rack place it in the certain safe place.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remove a rack of a suspension bracket or assembly of the shock-absorber (see the Section Removal and installation of assembly of a rack of a forward suspension bracket). Establish assembly in a vice. Protect sponges of a vice wooden whetstones or rags not to damage assembly, and do not tighten a vice too strongly.
  1. Following instructions of the producer, install the tool for compression of springs (it can be got in most shops of auto parts or to lend) on a spring and squeeze it so to remove all stress from a suspension bracket support. It is possible to check it, having shaken a spring.
  1. Remove a protective cap from the self-stopped shock-absorber nut. Release a nut by means of a wrench, at the same time holding the shock-absorber in an immovability other key.
  1. Give a nut, remove the rack bearing, the insulator and a big washer. Check whether the bearing easily works. If he jams, replace him. Check the rubber insulator for wear and existence of cracks, and if necessary replace it.
  2. Remove the holder of a spring and a rubber ring in the top part of a spring. Check a ring for existence of cracks and hardening. If necessary replace it.
  3. Carefully remove the compressed spring from assembly of a rack and place it in the reliable place, for example, in a steel locker.

Never incline the head close by the end of a spring!

  1. Pick up the protective phone and the rubber buffer from the shock-absorber. If they are worn-out or damaged, replace them.
  1. During the work from a resistant forward suspension bracket release and remove a carving cuff, then pull out old assembly of a rack from the rack case. Pour out old oil of the case.
  1. On all racks, except gas-filled, fill the case of a rack from 42 to 47 cm3 (on models 518i and 520i) or from 20 to 25 cm3 (on other models) engine oil (oil helps to cool the shock-absorber, transferring heat to the rack case).

Does not matter what engine oil to use.

  1. You make installation upside-down. Tighten a carving cuff with the required effort. Make sure that the end of a twisted spring is flush with a flange of a rubber ring and with the holder of a spring. Tighten a shock-absorber nut with the required effort.
  1. Establish a rack of a suspension bracket or assembly of the shock-absorber (see the Section Removal and installation of assembly of a rack of a forward suspension bracket).
