11.1.5. Removal and installation of the steering mechanism

Removal

If you found out that the steering mechanism it is faulty, it is not recommended to make its repair independently. As for repair special tools are required, it is better to provide it to dealer office of service (or completely to replace knot). The order of removal and installation of the steering mechanism is given below.


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. On the E28 models ("retro") discharge hydraulic system, having squeezed out a pedal of a brake about 20 times.
  2. By means of the big syringe or the manual pump drain the tank of hydraulic system of hydrostrengthening of a wheel (see the Head Routine maintenance of the car).
  3. Front of the car and reliably establish to Poddomkratta it on axial support.
  4. Prop up a forward part of the engine a jack on wheels. Place wooden whetstone between a head of a jack and the pallet of a case not to damage the pallet.
  5. Give hinged bolts on the internal ends of levers of a suspension bracket (see the Head the Forward suspension bracket).
  6. Give nuts on the left and right support of the engine (see the Head Dvigatel).
  1. Give fixing bolts (on early models on two from each party, on later - on three from each party) on a cross beam of a stretcher and remove a stretcher.
  1. Give nuts and bolts of fastening of a steering shaft to a worm shaft of the steering mechanism. Raise a steering shaft up and remove it from a worm shaft. Examine a steering shaft on existence of signs of wear. If it is worn-out or jam cardan hinges, replace it.
  1. Give hollow bolts and disconnect inlet (the right arrow) and returnable lines (the left arrow) of hydraulic system from the steering mechanism. Pay attention that the hollow bolt of the union of the returnable line is more, than a bolt of the union of the inlet line (it is shown for models with left-side management). Stop up the ends of lines not to allow pollution and loss of liquid. You will throw out sealing washers - at assembly it is necessary to establish new.
  1. Give bolts of fastening of the steering mechanism and remove the steering mechanism. The bolt specified by an arrow holds the steering mechanism on a cross beam of a stretcher. Access to a nut which is not visible on a photo above is provided through an opening in a cross beam (on a photo the engine is removed that it was visible better; the model with left-side management is shown):
  1. This bolt (it is specified by an arrow) holds the steering mechanism on a body (the nut which is not visible on a photo, is on the forward party of the mechanism):
  1. If it is necessary to disconnect a steering bipod from a sector shaft of the mechanism (for repair of the mechanism or replacement of a bipod), apply tags on both details that then it is correct to collect them. Give a fixing nut and a washer of a steering bipod. If necessary for removal of a bipod use a stripper.

Installation

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Establish a steering bipod, having combined the tags put earlier. Then tighten a nut with the required effort.
  2. After installation the steering bipod should not have any noticeable axial side play within 100 about from neutral situation. If the side play after all is, check the following details:
    • Sector shaft and bearings (on wear)
    • Persistent washer and head of an adjusting bolt (on wear)
    • Ball nut and worm shaft (on wear)
  3. Install the steering mechanism. Combine tags on a shaft of the steering mechanism and on a steering shaft and tighten bolts of fastening of the steering mechanism with the required effort.
  4. Other part of the procedure of installation repeats removal upside-down. Do not forget to establish new lock-nuts on a steering shaft, average steering draft, the steering mechanism and a cross beam. Use new sealing washers on nipple connections of hydraulic lines.
  5. Address the Head Routine maintenance of the car and fill the tank of hydraulic system of strengthening of a wheel with the recommended liquid, then pump over system as it is described in the Section Pumping of Hydraulic System of the Mechanism of Hydrostrengthening of a Wheel. Check whether there is no leak of liquid in lines and connections.
