2.1.6. Removal and installation of covers of a distributive chain

This procedure belongs to M10 and M30 engines.

The top cover of a distributive chain can be removed separately. If it is necessary to remove both the top, and lower covers, you will need special tools. Before work read points 8 and 9.

Removal

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Disconnect a negative wire of the battery.

If the radio receiver of your car is equipped with system of protection against theft, make sure that you gathered the correct code before a battery detachment.

If after connection of the battery of an inscription on an instrument guard appeared not in that language, address the Section System of Protection of the Audio System from theft and language of an instrument guard where the procedure of installation of the necessary language is described.

  1. If you remove the lower cover of a distributive chain (the top cover can be removed separately), remove the fan of cooling and a casing of the fan, a radiator and a pulley of a driving belt of the fan (see the Head the Cooling system).
  2. Only on the M10 engine remove the water pump (see the Head the Cooling system).
  3. On engines where the cover of the distributor of ignition is established directly on a cover of a distributive chain, uncover the distributor, the runner and a black plastic cover under the runner (see the Head Routine maintenance of the car).
  4. On the M30 engine equipped with the fuel L-Jetronic system remove the distributor from the top cover of a distributive chain (see the Head Sistem of ignition).
  5. Uncover a head of cylinders (see the Section Removal and installation of a cover of a head of cylinders).
  1. If you remove the lower cover of a distributive chain from the M30 engine, remove a pulley of a bent shaft from a damper of tortional fluctuations / naves. Hold a pulley in an immovability on the central bolt by means of a replaceable head, and give pulley bolts other replaceable head.
  1. If you remove the lower cover of a distributive chain, remove a shock-absorber/nave, having blocked a bent shaft and having released a big central bolt. As this bolt is tightened very hardly, you will need a long collar and a replaceable head. On M30 engines experts of BMW recommend to use a head 3/4 inches and a collar as on them the central bolt is tightened especially hardly. To block the crankshaft during weakening of a bolt, use special branded BMW adaptation No. 11 2 100 (or its equivalent).
  2. On M10 engines if you not could buy the special tool described in the previous point (8) it is possible to try to block the crankshaft, having uncovered a flywheel / a driving disk and having inserted the screw-driver with a wide sting into teeths of its wreath. On M30 engines after return of the central bolt, perhaps, it will be required to use a stripper with capture for removal of a damper of tortional fluctuations from the crankshaft. Establish capture for an internal flute of a pulley and very slowly tighten the central bolt of a stripper, all the time checking whether the pulley was bent.

If the pulley stuck to a bent shaft, it is possible to try to grease area of a nave with a small amount of the getting oil and then to slightly tap it the hammer.

  1. Unscrew a cap and remove a spring of a natyazhitel of a distributive chain.
  2. The plunger of a natyazhitel can leave together with a spring. If is not present, take a plunger from an opening for a spring of a natyazhitel. For check of work of a plunger see the Section Removal, survey and installation of a distributive chain and asterisks of its natyazhitel.

The spring is in the compressed state, and it can serve as the reason of sharp ejection of a cap from an opening. Hold a cap during untwisting and release a spring slowly.

  1. On M30 engines if you remove the top distributive cover, you otboltit a cover of the thermostat and remove the thermostat (see the Head the Cooling system).
  2. On M30 engines if you remove the lower distributive cover, weaken fixing bolts of the generator and take the generator aside. Give a forward lower bolt of a fixing bracket and weaken other bolts. Also you otboltit a fixing bracket of the steering pump with hydrostrengthening and take it aside.
  3. Give nuts and bolts of fastening of the top cover of a distributive chain to the block of cylinders and uncover. Draw the simple scheme of an arrangement of bolts that at assembly to establish them in the same openings from which they were taken. Remove the top cover of a distributive chain. If it stuck to the block of cylinders, softly tap it the hammer with rubber brisk, or apply to it wooden whetstone and knock on it with the hammer. On the M30 engines equipped with the fuel L-Jetronic system remove a power shaft of the distributor.
  4. Give nuts and bolts of fastening of the lower cover of a distributive chain to the block of cylinders. On forget to give below three bolts of fastening of a forward part of the pallet of a case to the lower part of a forward cover.
  1. Weaken other bolts of the pallet of a case.
  1. Carry out by a thin sharp knife between laying of the pallet of a case and the lower cover of a distributive chain, separating thus laying from a cover. Be very careful not to damage and to soil laying that you could use it again then.
  2. Destroy laying sealant between the lower cover of a distributive chain and the block of cylinders, having tapped a cover the hammer with rubber brisk or the ordinary hammer, having put wooden whetstone. Do not push anything between a cover and the block not to damage the surface of laying.
  3. Using a scraper, remove all traces of material of old laying from the interfaced surfaces of covers and the block of cylinders.

Be extremely careful not to damage and to scratch soft aluminum surfaces. Besides, try not to damage and not to soil laying of the pallet of a case. On sale are available, and there can be useful, special solvents for removal of laying. After full removal of material of laying of a surface of laying it is possible to degrease, having wiped them with the rag moistened in suitable solvent.

Installation

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Replace forward epiploons (see the Section Replacement of Forward Epiploons). You should not risk, leaving old epiploons since it is possible to replace them at uncovered. Do not forget to apply a little oil on sponges of forward epiploons.
  2. Apply a thin film of sealant like RTV on the surface of laying of the pallet of a case interfaced to the lower cover of a distributive chain. You apply more sealant on edges where laying adjoins to the block of cylinders.

If laying of the pallet of a case is damaged, then instead of full replacement of laying you can try to cut off its forward part where it adjoins to the block of cylinders, then to cut off a forward part of new laying that it was just the same size.

  1. Cover the internal surface of the pallet with a piece of rags, then clean off all traces of material of old laying from the interfaced surfaces. Attach a piece of new laying to the pallet by means of special adhesive substance, then put RTV-sealant as it is described at the beginning of this paragraph.
  2. Grease both parties of new laying of RTV-with sealant, attach the lower cover of a distributive chain to a forward part of the engine. Spread bolts and tighten them with the required effort. Tighten bolts one by one according to the crosswise scheme to make it evenly.

At first tighten bolts of fastening of the lower cover to the block of cylinders, then bolts of fastening of the pallet of a case to a cover. If laying acts over connection of a cover with the block or forms folds in connection of a cover with the pallet, cut it that it stood correctly.

After putting RTV sealant assembly has to be finished within 10 minutes to be in time before sealant hardening.

  1. Establish the top cover of a distributive chain in the same way, as lower. If laying acts over connection of a cover with the block of cylinders, cut off surplus the razor.
  2. You make the rest of the procedure of installation as it should be, the return to removal.
