2.2.5. Removal and installation of the engine

If the radio receiver in your car is supplied with system of protection against stealing, then before a detachment of the rechargeable battery be convinced that the correct code of activization is known to you.

If after connection of the rechargeable battery on the display of the dashboard of the radio receiver appear the unreadable message, then address the Section System of Protection of the Audio System from theft and language of an instrument guard for data on the procedure of installation of operation of the display.



  1. Take off pressure (watch Chapter the Power supply system) in fuel system, then disconnect a negative wire from the rechargeable battery.
  2. Cover wings and the panel of a front and remove a cowl (watch the Head Kuzov). There are special rugs for protection of wings, however, the old cover will also be suitable for a bed or a blanket.
  3. Remove the case of the air cleaner and inlet air ducts (watch Chapter the Power supply system).
  4. Drain the cooling system (watch Chapter Routine maintenance of the car).
  1. For the subsequent correct accession mark vacuum lines, hoses of system of decrease in toxicity, sockets of cables, tires of the earth and fuel lines, then disconnect them. It is convenient to apply pieces of an adhesive tape with figures or letters.

If there is some possibility of a mistake, make the sketch of a motive compartment and accurately mark lines, hoses and wires.

  1. Mark and disconnect all hoses of the cooling system from the engine (watch Chapter the Cooling system).
  2. Remove the cooling fan, a casing and a radiator (watch Chapter the Cooling system).

On the M40 engine it is necessary to remove only the fan of cooling and a casing; however, protect a radiator from damage by a board or cardboard.

  1. Take off driving belts (watch Chapter Routine maintenance of the car).
  2. Disconnect fuel lines from a fuel supply tube (watch Chapter the Power supply system).

Fuel is extremely flammable therefore take additional precautionary measures during the work with any part of fuel system. You do not smoke, do not apply naked flame or lighters without plafonds near a working zone and do not work in a garage with the equipment on natural gas (such as heater of water or dryer for clothes) in which there is a match.

  1. When performing any work with fuel system use goggles and you keep in readiness the fire extinguisher.
  2. Disconnect from the engine an accelerator cable (watch Chapter the Power supply system) and draft a speed control dumping/cable if are applied (watch Chapter the Automatic Transmission (AT)).
  3. If it is established, remove the power steering pump (watch Chapter Steering). Leave tubes/hoses attached and be convinced that the pump in a motive compartment keeps in the correct situation (tie him aside a rope or a wire).
  4. On models with the conditioner of air remove the compressor (watch Chapter the Cooling system) and take aside or bind out of a working zone. Do not disconnect hoses.
  5. Merge motive oil (watch Chapter Routine maintenance of the car) and remove an oil filter. Remove protection against splashes under the engine.
  6. Remove a starter (watch the Head Sistem of onboard electric equipment).
  7. Remove the generator (watch the Head Sistem of onboard electric equipment). It is not obligatory on all models, but it is anyway expedient in order to avoid damage.
  8. Disconnect system of release from the engine (watch Chapter the Power supply system).
  9. If the car is equipped with automatic transmission, turn off bolts and nuts of fastening of the converter of rotation to a drive plate (watch Chapter the Automatic Transmission (AT)). On the M40 engine turn off bolts of fastening of tubes of cooling of liquid of automatic transmission from the pallet.
  10. Establish a jack under transmission. For prevention of damage of transmission establish between them tree whetstone. There are special jacks for transmissions with safe chains - whenever possible use such.
  11. Fasten to engine eyes a sling for rise or a chain piece. If eyes are removed, then the chain can be fixed directly on hairpins of the inlet pipeline, however between a chain and a nut establish a flat washer and tighten a nut before full pressing of a chain to avoid possible bending of hairpins.
  12. Drive the winch and attach to it a sling. Choose a weak point of a sling or a chain, but do not lift the engine.

Not to podlezayta under the engine when it is kept only by the winch or other lifting device.

  1. On M10, M20 and M30 engines remove a back cross-piece of fastening of transmission and lower its back part a little.
  2. By means of a face six-sided head remove bolts of fastening of transmission to the block of cylinders.

The otvorachivaniye of bolts of fastening of a case of coupling to the block of cylinders will require a hinged key with very big extender which needs to be directed to a back part of transmission.

  1. Remove nuts of fastening of support of the engine to frame arms. On the M40 engine turn off bolts of dampers from support.
  2. Again check whether there is no other connection of the engine left with transmission or the car still. If remained, then disconnect them.
  3. Raise the engine a little. Carefully give it for a detachment from transmission forward. If you work with the engine with automatic transmission, then the converter of rotation can move together with the engine forward. If it remained in transmission, then do not touch it, however, to you can seem to simpler to allow it to move forward further to capture him hands and to remove from a bent shaft.

Before installation in rotation converter transmission at return of the engine be into place convinced that the forward epiploon of the pump of transmission is replaced on new as former at removal of the engine together with the converter it is, as a rule, damaged. Any way is admissible, however, prepare that a liquid quantity at a rotation converter exit from transmission will flow out. If you work with the engine with manual transmission, then give the engine forward that the entrance shaft was completely disconnected from coupling. Slowly lift the engine from a motive compartment. Attentively check that everything is disconnected.

  1. Remove a flywheel / a drive plate (and a back cover of the engine if it is applied)...

... also install the engine on the special stand. Do not overturn the M40 engine (watch the Section Ways of removal of the engine and a precautionary measure).



  1. Check support of the engine and transmission. If they are worn-out or damaged, then replace them.
  2. Establish a flywheel or a drive plate (watch the Part the Repair work which is carried out without extraction of the engine from the car). On the engine with manual transmission establish coupling and press a disk (watch Chapter the Manual Box of Gear Shifting (MBGS)). This suitable time for coupling replacement.
  3. If at removal of the engine the converter of rotation left together with it, then before lowering of the engine carefully install the converter in transmission in the car.
  4. Carefully lower the engine in a motive compartment; be convinced that support of the engine coincide.
  5. On the car with automatic transmission install the rotation converter on a bent shaft, following instructions in the Head the Automatic Transmission (AT).
  6. On the car with manual transmission apply on an entrance shaft of a little high-temperature lubricant and insert it into coupling and the auxiliary bearing of a bent shaft that the case of coupling appeared aflush with the block of cylinders. Do not assume that the weight of the engine fell on an entrance shaft.

For combination of shlits of an entrance shaft of a clutch plate can be required to shake slightly the engine or to turn a bent shaft.

  1. Establish bolts of fastening of transmission to the engine and tighten them.

Do not use bolts for pulling up of transmission to the engine.

  1. Install upside-down other components.
  2. Fill in a cooler, oil, liquid of the power steering and if it is necessary, transmission liquid.
  3. Start the engine and check existence of leaks and correctness of operation of all units, then establish a cowl and check the car on the run.
  4. If necessary make charging of the air conditioning system and check on leaks.
