17.7. Replacement of motive oil and oil filter

Two times a year or each 10 000 km of a run (that will come earlier)

These tools are necessary for carrying out change of motive oil and an oil filter.

1 — Drain capacity - has to be not really deep, but rather wide to avoid a spillage
2 — Rubber gloves - at removal of a drain stopper and an oil filter oil will inevitably get to you on hands (gloves will protect from burns)
3 — the Collar - sometimes the drain stopper is tightened very hardly, and its otdavaniye requires application of a long collar. It is possible to use a cap key of the suitable size also
4 — the Face head - is used complete with a collar or the ratchet drive (has to correspond by the size to a head of a drain stopper
5 — the Key for removal of an oil filter is a metal tape key which use requires existence of a certain free space around the filter. Such key is necessary not for all types of engines
6 — the Key for removal of an oil filter - this key is put on a bottom of the filter and can turn by means of the ratchet drive or a collar (for various types of filters there are keys of the different sizes). Such key is necessary not for all types of engines

The long contact of skin with the fulfilled motive oil is quite dangerous. Use protective cream and put on gloves during this procedure. Replace the clothes which became impregnated with oil immediately.

Frequent replacement of motive oil is the main preventive procedure of service, to the available amateur mechanic. Eventually oil is subject to fluidifying and pollution that leads to premature wear of the engine.


  1. Before getting to work, make sure available all necessary tool. You also should have near at hand enough rags or old newspapers for collecting the spilled oil.
  2. Start the engine and warm up it up to the normal working temperature - warm oil and a sediment follow from the engine better. If it is necessary to buy new oil, the filter or any tools, go behind them on the car, thus you will warm up motive oil at the same time.
  3. Park the car on a plain surface and switch off the engine when it enough gets warm. Uncover a mouth of the gulf of oil a cover of a head of cylinders.
  4. For ensuring access to a drain stopper and an oil filter the car and reliably establish to a poddomkratta it on axial support.

Do not work under the car supported only hydraulic or scissors type by a jack at all - always use axial support!

  1. If you for the first time were going to make change of oil on this car, get under it and get acquainted with an arrangement of a drain stopper and an oil filter. Pay attention that on some engines the oil filter is located in the top left part of the engine. When holding this procedure components of system of release will be hot therefore notice where there pass pipes not to adjoin to them in the course of work.
  2. Trying not to concern the warmed components, establish drain capacity under a drain stopper in the lower part of the engine.
  1. Clear the area around a stopper, then give a stopper. It is recommended at a stopper otdavaniye on the last several turns to use rubber gloves not to get burns hot oil. During untwisting of a stopper try to press it to a case, and then sharply pull out it. It will help you to avoid contact of a hand with a stream of hot oil, and also a possibility of loss of a stopper in drain capacity.
  1. In process of weakening of a pressure of oil at an effluence, perhaps, change of provision of capacity under a case will be required. Check old oil for existence of metal particles, it can warn you about wear of the engine in advance.
  2. After discharge of old oil wipe a drain stopper with pure rags. Any, even the smallest metal parts which stuck to a stopper will immediately pollute new oil.
  3. Establish a stopper and reliably tighten it. If necessary use a new washer.
  4. Establish drain capacity into place under an oil filter.

Oil filter of case type


  1. Weaken fastening of the getting-out oil filter, having turned it counterclockwise a key for removal of filters. Any key will be suitable for filters.
  2. Sometimes the getting-out filter is twirled so hardly that it is hard to release it. In this case punch it a metal rod or the long screw-driver through and using it as a collar, turn the filter. Be ready that when punching the case of the filter from it oil will scatter.
  3. Having released the filter, unscrew it hands from the block of cylinders. After removal of the filter quickly turn it the open end up not to allow a spill of oil.
  4. Wipe with pure rags the surface of the block of cylinders. Make sure that any of old sealing rings did not get stuck in the fixing surface of the block. In need of them it is possible to remove with a scraper.
  1. Make sure that the type of the new filter corresponds to old. Oil motive a rubber sealing ring of the new filter and establish it into place. Do not use a key for filters since pulling of the filter will lead to consolidation damage. Most of producers of filters recommend to tighten only them hands. Usually they can be tightened on three quarters of a turn after contact of a sealing ring with the block, but it is better to follow instructions on the filter.

Oil filter of cartridge type


  1. Some models are equipped with an oil filter of cartridge type. Give a bolt, uncover and pull out the filter.
  1. Compare a new element to old and be convinced that it the same type, then install it in the filter case.
  1. Wipe with pure rags the fixing surface of the case and a cover. If necessary replace a rubber sealing ring of round section. Oil a new ring pure and establish a cover and a bolt. Reliably tighten a bolt.

All models


  1. Take all tool and rags from under the car, trying not to spill oil from drain capacity, then lower the car on the earth.
  2. Fill in new oil in the engine through a mouth in a cover of a head of cylinders. In order to avoid the passage of oil on the engine use a funnel. Pour in the amount of fresh oil specified in the Size table and adjusting data at the end of the Management in the engine. Wait several minutes to allow oil to flow down in the case pallet, then check its level the measuring probe (see the Section Check of Levels of Liquids). If level within norm, close a mouth a cover.
  3. Start the engine and let's it work about a minute. To an alarm lamp of low pressure of oil several seconds can be required to be switched off while new oil fills the filter; while it burns, do not switch off the engine. In operating time of the engine glance under the car and check whether there are no leaks through a drain stopper and around an oil filter. If there is a leak, switch off the engine and hold on a stopper and/or the filter a little.
  4. Wait several minutes and again check oil level. If necessary make having added.
  5. The first few days after oil replacement often check its level and existence of signs of leaks.
  6. The fulfilled oil merged from the engine in its present look is not subject to reuse and has to be thrown out. The centers for utilization and some automobile repair shops can accept the fulfilled oil which it is possible then to process. After the merged oil will cool down, it can be poured in a suitable container and to send to place of acceptance.

The discharge of the fulfilled oil in the sewerage is illegal and antisocial. Address to local collection points for working off.
