17:19. Check and adjustment of gaps of valves

Annually or each 20 000 km of a run

This procedure does not belong to the M10 engine which has automatic regulators.

Gaps of valves can be checked both at warmed, and at the cold engine, but keep in mind that the received sizes have to differ depending on engine temperature. If you are going to carry out the procedure of check and adjustment of gaps at the warmed engine, it is necessary to start it, to warm up up to the normal working temperature and then to switch off.

If gaps of valves are regulated at the warmed engine, it is necessary to be especially careful to avoid burns.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Uncover a head of cylinders the engine (see the Part the Repair work which is carried out without extraction of the engine from the car).
  2. Turn the engine so that the forward piston No. 1 was in the top dead point (TDP) of a step of compression (see the Part the Repair work which is carried out without extraction of the engine from the car).
  3. Check gaps of valves for the cylinder No. 1. The required sizes of gaps are specified in the Size table and adjusting data at the end of the Management.
  4. The gap is measured by insertion of the probe of the measuring instrument of the required size between the end of a rod of the valve and the adjusting clown of the lever of the valve. The probe has to pass in a gap with some resistance.
  1. If the gap is too big or too small, weaken a lock-nut, insert a hook from a thick metal wire and turn the clown before achievement of the necessary gap.
  1. After installation of a gap reliably tighten a lock-nut, holding the clown in the reached situation with the help of a hook. Double-check gap size - sometimes it slightly changes after tightening of a lock-nut. In this case adjust it up to the necessary size.
  2. On M10 engines valves are adjusted in an operating procedure of cylinders, namely 1-3-4-2. After adjustment of valves of the first cylinder turn the crankshaft half way (180 °), then check and adjust valves on the third cylinder. Repeat the procedure on other cylinders.
  3. On M20 and M30 engines valves are also adjusted in an operating procedure of cylinders, namely 1-5-3-6-2-4. After adjustment of valves of the first cylinder turn the crankshaft on a third of a turn (120 °), then check and adjust valves on the fifth cylinder. Repeat the procedure on other cylinders.
  4. Establish a cover of a head of cylinders (use new laying) and tighten fixing nuts exactly and reliably.
  5. Start the engine and check whether there is no leak of oil between a cover of a head of cylinders and a head of cylinders.
